The core function of an exchange is to ensure fair and orderly trading and the efficient dissemination of price information for any securities trading on that exchange. Exchanges give companies, governments, and other groups a platform from which to sell securities to the investing public.

The most prominent exchanges in U.S. stock market include the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq (NAS). There are 13 exchanges in the US in total.

NYSE

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is a stock exchange located in New York City that is considered the largest equities-based exchange in the world, based on the total market capitalization of its listed securities.

Nasdaq

Nasdaq was created by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) to enable investors to trade securities on a computerized, speedy and transparent system, and commenced operations on 1971. It is considered as the largest global electronic marketplace for trading securities, the second largest stock exchange in U.S. market, as well as the benchmark index for U.S. technology stocks.
